From 2013 to 2016, Hefei has participated in the RoboCup for four consecutive years, and hosted it in 2015. From the perspective of the host, Hefei gets ahead in the robot R&D and competition in China.

Technological development is not the ultimate goal. Hefei has attempted to break the “Application Gap”, to bring research achievements out of the lab and into the production and life of common people.

Robot industrialization is still making progress, and Hefei need to temper its efforts forward.

It is expected that the output value of robot industry in Hefei will reach RMB 50 billion yuan by 2020, and the base of intelligent robot industry with an important influence in China will be built up.

 “Host” for four times

From April 26 to April 28, 2016 RoboCup kicked off in Hefei, China.

280 teams from all over China met in Hefei, and a “Robot War” started. The winners will participate in the RoboCup Finals on behalf of China.

This was a high-profile robot competition hosted by Hefei since the 19^th RoboCup. So far, Hefei has held relevant events of RoboCup for four consecutive times.

We might say that it is rare that relevant events of RoboCup have been held in the same city for four consecutive times.

All this is not by accident.

 “From the level of robot R&D and competition, Hefei has strong comprehensive strength, for example, USTC and Hefei University of Technology have remarkable robot research results, and have achieved good results in big events. In particular, USTC has won the championship for many times nationwide and worldwide.” said Li Shi, Deputy Secretary-General of CAA.

 “At present, Hefei takes a lead in the field of robot competition and relevant research of China.” said Li Shi, “The CAA will still choose Hefei to host the large-scale robot events when appropriate.”

Successfully hosting the RoboCup not only stimulates the enthusiasm of Hefei people to advocate science and pursue entrepreneurship, but also promotes vigorous development of robot research and industry in Hefei.

Out of the lab

This is not just robot R&D.

Hefei starts to break the “Application Gap”, to bring research achievements out of the lab and into the production and life of common people.

In the robot restaurant of Goocoo Group, there is a group of special “waiters”. They walk on the ground rail with plates, and deliver meals to each dining table. Once customers “occupy the road”, they will politely remind them, “Hello, my guests are waiting for food, excuse me.”

The special “waiters” are robots. Because of robot waiters, the restaurant is popular in the market.

Of course, at present, the robot waiters cannot realize the goal of “Replacing humans with robots”, but show a trend at least that robots are within touch gradually.

USTC became the focus of attention once again this April.

On April 15, the first special interactive robot of China “Jiajia” emerged in USTC. She has long hair down to her shoulders, delicate facial features and tender skin, and is able to have a conversation with people tenderly...At first glance, there is no big difference between “Jiajia” and humans.

 “There is no timetable for “Jiajia” to be used by ordinary people, but ultimately she still serves human beings. First, she is applied in the fields of accompanying the patients and the old” said Chen Xiaoping, Director of the Robot Laboratory, USTC.

Output value of RMB 50 billion yuan

With the rapid development of industrial economy, robots enter into Hefei factories, and replace humans to do heavy, advanced and sophisticated work.

In the welding workshop of No.3 JAC passenger vehicle factory, rows of robotic arms are welding. Against arc spark, welding assembly of vehicles is completed, and vehicles “walk” out of the assembly line. Daily workload per welding robot is equivalent to that of 3-5 skilled workers. Compared with humans, welding assembly by robot ensures not only quality but also safety.

In TAIHO product display workshop, at the terminal of assembly line, a palletizing robot is on standby, moving rice bags to the transport passageway nearby in order. Subsequently, a handling robot “manually releases the button panel”, and send rice bags to the designated place along the specific rail.

Demand for robot supply

As early as in 2013, General Office of National Development and Reform Commission and General Office of Ministry of Finance officially approved the pilot implementation programs for strategic regional concentrated development of emerging industries in Anhui Province. Among them, the concentrated development of robot industry has become a national pilot program, and the robot industry in Hefei has entered the “Golden Phase” of its development.

At present, a new round of technological revolution represented by the robot industry is growing rapidly in the world. Aiming at cutting-edge and high-end industries, supported by USTC and other well-known colleges and universities, Hefei is poised for robot R&D and industrial development.
